Dominican College of Tarlac (DCT) joins in celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month this October with this year’s campaign slogan “Mental health care for all: let's make it a reality” which aims to raise awareness about mental health issues to the students.

As the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic made a big impact on the lives of the people, it also took a toll on the mental health of the people.

The DCT-Guidance and Counseling Office (DCT-GCO) have prepared a series of activities for the students in different departments which promote mental health.

In the senior high school department, DCT-GCO prepared a webinar held on October 22, 2021, entitled “Taking care of you: Setting personal boundaries for a Better Well-being” with its speaker, Ms. Chaterine A. Santos, Guidance Counselor, and Mental Health Professional. The schedule for grade 11 students started in the morning and afternoon for the grade 12 students.

The webinar consists of six talking points: What is a boundary, 8 Basic Principles of Healthy Boundary Setting, How to Establish Healthier Boundaries, 11 Signs and Symptoms of Ignored Boundaries, 23 Signs of Unhealthy Boundaries, and Rational Boundary-Building Thinking.

Ms. Santos explained the main topic about boundaries, which helps people define what they are comfortable with and how they would like to be treated by others which is applicable in any relationship. Moreover, she also tackled the positive and negative factors of building boundaries.

On the night of the same day, the Senior High School - Supreme Student Government (SHS-SSG), in collaboration with The Alliance of Language Speakers- Debate Society (TALAS-DS), went live for their second episode of the podcast with the title of “Sunrise: A new day will soon arrive” with the hosts, Ms. Lhouise Que (F&B 12 Governor), Ms. Irish Barrera (GAS Governor), Mr. Jhan Ford Laxamana (ABM 12 Governor), Ms. Ashanti Rivera (STEM 12 Governor), Ms. Czarina Lumapas (HUMSS 12 Governor), and member of TALAS-DS, Ms. Nishin Anne Pacifico.

The podcast is part of the celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month and a tribute to the Dominikanos that featured some of the students' stories of courage.

Furthermore, the DCT-GCO also conducted webinars in the Junior High School Department. For grades 7 and 8, entitled “Individual Differences: Embracing Uniqueness.” For grades 9 and 10, entitled “Mind your Mind: Recognizing Self-Sabotaging Behaviors and Thoughts,” and for grades 1-6, an art class entitled “Mindfulness Coloring activity” was prepared.
